This is a question that is often asked by interested parties. Yes, we agree it can be confusing. Usually, people expect an IT company to work on a specific product or service and market that to the world and make money. We are not such a conventional IT company. So what does a "laboratory" do?

Why we call ourselves a laboratory is that we happily experiment with grappling with problems. We do not wait for others to give us a custom software development project (we do that too, but in a very limited manner) Instead we work on several IT products and then we offer those products to others (Indians only) for them to start their own IT startups.

So how does our products reach the market?

We do not believe in vacuous, meaningless mentoring and lecturing about startups on the side to impress young startups*. Instead we like to actually prove that our intellectual properties are really worth the salt. So all our products are actually available for sale too -- just like the way you would get products from IT companies. In that regard, you can look at us as a regular IT company selling products to others. However, in our case, all our products are made available to enterprising youths from India who can convince us that they can run a startup using each of those IT products.

That means, initially you may see a product of ours being sold by us -- but later on you may find the same product (either under the same brand or re-branded) being managed and sold by an entirely different company. At that point in time, our revenues are not directly from that product but we would get royalties from that company that is now managing our product.

*This is a core foundational principle of our company. We are a company that tackles wicked problems so that youngsters can jump-start their companies with the work we have done. We have given a deeper answer about the ills that we found in the startup system in India in a different post in this discussion forum. Look up that answer too.

As we are a software laboratory; we work on different problems that affect the information technology world. However, we do not claim that we have expertise in solving ALL the problems in the IT world. Let us explain the rationale on the kind of problems we take up, and the type of solution space we search to tackle those problems.

Problem selection

We mostly take up problems that affect the business world.

Of those problems, we are attracted to those problems that affect the business' usage of the Internet.

We lean towards those problems that have not yet been fully tackled by others -- or are poorly tackled by others.

As our founder is an architect, with a lot of experience in designing and finding solutions for the built-environment, many of our problem statements are motivated by the fact that the world is now integrating two different kind of "spaces" -- one is the spaces of the real built-environment and the other is "cyberspace" Many do not realize this: The entire world is at a cusp of a revolution where soon practically everyone will be living in both the kind of spaces. In fact it is already happening -- We visit a coffee and exist both in the coffee shop as well as inside a Facebook/Instagram/Twitter thread. it is high time that architects such as our founder contributes deeply into finding solutions for this unique living situation we are getting into. For far too long, bad architecture theories have been corrupting the real world spaces. And now the cyberspace is also getting corrupted by bad theories on the architecture of that space too!

Solution search space

Due to our founders competence in the world of architecture, several solutions from our laboratory use real-world architecture paradigms. Such as architecture floor plans forming the basis on which actual work gets done in our products.

For the same reason as above, several of our products and platforms are graphical in nature. We lean towards 2D and studiously avoid esoteric tech such as VR and AR -- the reasons for this avoidance are mentioned elsewhere in our website and this discussion forum.

Several products we develop are full blown "SaaS" (Software As A Service) that work in browsers. However, we also take up products whose solutions are offered by what we call as "Hybrid-SaaS" where part of the solution works on a regular computer (desktops/laptops) and the other part works on the Internet (sometimes using a browser based application) The reason for such "Hybrid-SaaS" is explained in more detail elsewhere in this forum

We are highly concerned about protecting our user's privacy. So we rarely make attempts to collect our user's email addresses; as we hardly send out any marketing information via email. (NOTE: We do collect email address for the purpose of sending out critical information) In some of our solutions, we have implemented an inward SMS (Text) messaging system to carry out registration and other useful activities.

What is an "inward" SMS? That means, it is an SMS the user knowingly sends to a special number we manage in order to achieve some purpose with us. This is quite different from an SMS that gets pushed into your phone. We simply do not do that kind of pushing. That is just spam, according us (and many others). We do not like spam.

We have a "platform" first approach when developing a solution. That means, when we solve a problem, we do not solve a problem so that only a business gets its benefits. But we try to solve it in such a way that the solution itself becomes a "platform" where several allied problems can all be solved by some businesses catering to other businesses with some extra custom coding and/or configurations. That means, our solution itself becomes a revenue making system for some businesses. That means you can look at us as a B-2-B-2-B kind of company. Not just a B-2-B one!

Do connect with us if you believe you need to solve a hard technical problem. We have expertise in over 12 computer languages; and a collective man-year experience of over forty years.
Our founder; Sabu Francis, has been also a respected teacher. He has over 30+ years experience in teaching adolescents undergoing professional courses -- both architecture as well as in IT. For three years, he was the head of the IT department of a college in Pune, India (2009-2012) Several of his students have gone on to make notable progress in their respective fields.

One of the key problems when teaching adolescents who are in professional courses is that current syllabi often just talks about the "what" and not much about the "why" Also; the system is not conducive to tap into the highly charged-up brains of teenagers. Neuroscience tells us that the typical adolescent brain has over 30% more synapses than the working adult brain. If those synapses are not fully utilized, they are pruned away naturally. At the same time, these fresh brains are still developing the axion sheaths needed to improve the efficiency of the working of the brain. Without proper guidance, the decision making of these teens are rather slow. Sabu's vast experience and knowledge in teaching can be very useful to motivate students before they set out into the world and make them self-aware of the potential they hold.

India has the largest corpus of youths in the world. It would be a crying shame if the intelligence of these fresh minds are not properly motivated and harnessed.

Critical Thinking and Design Thinking have to be understood together. It is not possible to practice design thinking, if your critical thinking capabilities are not in order. Indian institutes typically do not have any intensive course on either of these topics. The result is that a lot of fresh graduates (and often even those who are into the field) make a lot of fallacious mistakes and cannot weed out their own cognitive biases during their work.

Such a state of affairs hampers productivity and efficiency of the person himself/herself. But it can also result in a lot more serious errors too: Teamwork can be seriously hampered if one indulges in incorrect thinking and argumentation. In certain (hopefully rare) instances, it can even result in loss of life. For example; the deep-sea adventure diving that killed five people when visiting the shipwreck of Titanic has been attributed to lack of critical thinking on the part of the founder of that adventure company.

Our founder, Sabu Francis, has given training on this topic at MIT(Pune) for their Business Innovation Program for several years. A three week program was also conducted for the Hyderabad office of a US healthcare IT company in 2022.

If you are interested in conducting a training session on these two topics for your office/institution; do let us know. Either write a reply here or send us a private message after registering here. The workshop will only be conducted online; as per the available time-slots of our founder; Sabu Francis.

Limen Leap Labs was started out of frustration, frankly. Our founder was deeply dissatisfied by the way IT startups grew in India. Time and again, there have been momentary successes of some unicorn or the other only to realize that it was just a flash in the pan; and then the flash disappeared. Our founder also felt an urgent need to help the large young population of India (India has the largest corpus of youth in the world)

Why do IT product companies do not really emerge from India, was a pressing question.

India has been seeing a lot of "startup" buzz, including incubation centres and accelerators. But what Sabu Francis noticed is that almost all of them fitted into a "formula" -- they gave a lot of theory and talk from the sides. But practically none of them actually put their skin in the game. In fact many of them will not even give money -- they just give vacuous advice and some nice chairs to sit on and air-conditioning. Events they held were largely conducted by mentors who were only spouting theories -- with practically no scruffy experience in the world of startups.

Add to the mess, the youngsters who were often attracted to such incubation centres and accelerators -- sat with preconceived notions on how startups in the IT field had to be organized. For example: Get a brilliant idea, work on it a bit, get a team together (maybe not in the same order) and eventually raise funds. Only to fail miserably later.

The youngsters were not really solving real problems. They were coaxed/goaded into a preconceived formula.

This got Sabu thinking -- why is it that good problems are not being solved? Why is it that most of the IT innovations in India were really imitations of what happened in other countries? Why can't we have startups that go on to really become well respected IT companies?

The answer had three parts : Exposure, maturity and a keen eye for BHAGs (Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals)

Limen Leap Labs arose from the messy world of architecture and construction in a scruffy developing country called India. One cannot get a more intense, raw experience on what life demands. Sabu Francis, was 58 when he started Limen Leap Labs -- with plenty of maturity and hard knocks behind him. Having taught students in professional careers (both architecture as well as IT), he has a good understanding of the adolescent Indian brain -- and he has a pedigree of producing works that many did not even think were possible from India.

Limen Leap Labs is an atelier -- a French term for the studio of a "master craftsperson" who actively mentors other artists and craftspersons. Not from the outside, but right inside the studio. Instead of investing money in others; Limen Leap Labs decided to invest intellectual properties in the youngsters of India. Each IPR would be given to a small group of enthusiastic and capable Indians who can create a startup around it. Sabu Francis would join them for a few months as an external CTO and handover the IPR via a B.O.T (build, operate, transfer) process.

That is how we are now poised.
